I've held off long enough, but I don't think I can wait any longer. Spring is just about a week away and now that it's officially daylight savings time, I think we can start setting our minds to warmer weather, new growth, and all of the beautiful things that the Spring season brings.
It's a time old homemaking tradition to jump into Spring cleaning in the first few weeks of the season. Dusting off appliances, wiping down the windows and letting fresh, Spring air permeate the home.
Over the last few years, I've tried to Spring clean multiple areas of my life aside from just my home. Spring cleaning can be ridding yourself of toxic people or habits, getting rid of clothes that no longer fit, or home decor that you don't use anymore.
It's an opportunity for us to welcome in new growth, new possibilities and to truly start the New Year.
So many people say that they don't feel like the New Year truly starts until the first day of Spring and I wholeheartedly agree. Living with the seasons and with nature means that as the flowers and plants emerge from their hiding places, so do we.
Here are 7 things to consider Spring cleaning this year.
Subscriptions
Every so often I'll go through my subscriptions on my phone and realize I am paying for things I didn't even know I was paying for. I can't be the only one who signs up for a free trial and then forgets to cancel it once the trial is over. There are services that can go into your devices and cancel your subscriptions, but it's just as easy to do it yourself. Stop spending money unnecessarily and Spring clean those subscriptions.
Your closet
Spring is also a wonderful time to go through your closet and find the pieces that simply aren't working for you anymore. Things that are too tight or too big, or that don't align with your style anymore. Get rid of it! And make space for clothing that makes you feel your absolute best.
Take your clothes to Buffalo Exchange or Crossroads and give them the chance to find a new home.
Rugs, carpet & upholstery
As a hardwood floor lover myself, I much prefer a mop to a vacuum. But I often forget to clean our rugs and upholstery on a day to day basis. Spring is a great time to take a deeper look at some of the fabrics in your living spaces and give them a good wipe down.
Windows & mirrors
Windows are probably the most quintessential part of the home we think about when thinking of Spring cleaning. Just allowing that beautiful warm sunlight to flood through the home is such a notable moment of moving into the warmer months.
I've tried various ways of cleaning windows and mirrors, but I've found that good old fashioned water and paper towels works the best! Windows can accumulate so much dust, so I like to spray natural, multi-surface cleaner to really get the grime that has built up over the Winter.
For mirrors, nothing cleans better than warm water and paper towels. I promise, it will leave your mirrors shining and clear as day.
Ceiling fans
I don't know about y'all but one of the reasons why I don't love ceiling fans is because of the insane amount of dust they accumulate over time. I truly believe that if you're not going to be paying attention to and cleaning your ceiling fans every week, then don't bother having them installed! They are a pain in the rear end and can end up looking disgusting if not cleaned on a consistent schedule.
Take this opportunity to look at your ceiling fans (if you have them), and wipe them down. Surface cleaner, warm water, and towels do the job just fine here.
Air filters
It wasn't until I moved to Fancy Cottage that I learned about the need to change air filters. The first time I saw my husband take out the air filter and install a new one I was genuinely confused as to what he was doing.
This is another thing that sneaks up on you and before you realize it, it's absolutely filled with dust. Get that fresh air flowing through your space by checking your air filters and changing them out.
Apps & digital files
Around this time every year, I also like to go through my apps and delete any that I'm not loving or using. There are some apps that sounds good or fun in the moment, but after awhile I just forget about them or stop using them.
I also take a lot of screenshots when I want to research something or look up where a product is from. So I have a lot of photos clogging up my files as well.
Go through your phone and delete what you're not using! Pictures, voice memos, apps and anything else that is taking up too much space.
